Rock star turned director Rob Zombie’s (The Devil’s Rejects) reboot of slasher classic Halloween fell flat back in 2007, and his follow-up doesn’t fare any better. It doesn’t bear much of a resemblance to the 1981 original sequel – and there are some who may think that’s no bad thing – and with its bizarre mix of torture porn and some ill-advised delving into the psyche of serial killer icon Michael Myers it’s a real horror for all the wrong reasons.
We spent most of the fourth day of FrightFest ’09 in the Discovery Screen, where there was a host of intriguing film fare on offer. And we weren’t the only ones to take advantage of this year’s new double-screen choices, as American Werewolf director John Landis also took his seat in the smaller screen. And first up was Salvage, the excellent ultra-real chiller from British writer/director Lawrence Gough.
Zack (Seth Rogen) and Miri (Elizabeth Banks) are best friends; they have known each other since high school and now share a flat. But friendship doesn’t pay the bills, and they are soon struggling to make ends meet. When Zack hits upon the idea of making a low budget porn movie to pull in some cash, Miri thinks it’s a great idea; until they realise they are going to have to take starring roles. Both are worried that their hot n’ heavy love scene may have an impact on their friendship, but neither are prepared for the feelings it ignites.
