What can you say about Ethan Maniquis and Robert Rodriguez’s cheerfully blood-soaked Mexploitation B-movie tribute? It’s hard to know where to stop, and you get the impression the film-makers were faced with a similar dilemma.

FrightFest 2010 kicked off in style with the world premiere of Adam Green’s long-awaited sequel Hatchet II, which returns to the Louisiana swampland home of deformed boogeyman Victor Crowley. Attending the screening with the director were stars Danielle Harris – who takes over the lead role of Marybeth from original actress Tamara Feldman – and horror legends Kane ‘Jason Voorhees’ Hodder, who takes the role of Victor Crowley, and Tony ‘Candyman’ Todd, who plays the mysterious Reverend Zombie. Cherrybomb (DVD)
Like TV hit Skins – with which it bears more than a passing resemblance – Cherrybomb distills the modern youth experience into an orgy of drink, drugs and stupid decisions. Grint impresses, in his first post-Harry Potter role, as Malachy, whose attempts to beat best pal Luke (Misfits star Sheehan) to the heart – and bed – of temptress Michelle (Nixon) bring life-shattering consequences.
Despite his efforts, and the film’s attempts to shock, it’s pretty pedestrian stuff, and won’t hold much interest for anyone on the wrong side of 20. 2 stars
