There is no hunting like the hunting of men

Almost a quarter of a century ago, John McTiernan’s Predator cast Arnie as an alien hunter extraordinare and thrilled audiences in the process. No matter that it stuttered as a franchise, with the recent Alien Vs Predator movies smacking of desperation; the original is now heralded as one of the pinnacle moments of Eighies action excess. And riding the wave of nostalgia for this decade that has driven recent reboots like Rambo and A Nightmare on Elm Street comes the all-new Predators, a glossy homage to its 1987 godfather that celebrates all that was great about the original while introducing the concept to a new, effects-savvy generation.

School’s out

If your father is the director of Alien and Blade Runner, it’s one hell of a shadow to step out of, particularly if you’re stepping into the family business. Cracks is the debut feature from Jordan Scott, daughter of Ridley, and while it’s a lazy thing to do, one can’t help but look for the familial genes at work.

Man in the moon…

In the not so distant future, after mankind has ravaged the Earth’s natural resources to the brink of destruction, salvation is found on the far side of the moon. It is home to massive quantities of Helium-3, a fuel that has become essential to mankind’s survival, and so mega-corporation Lunar Industries sends astronauts to oversee the mining of this miracle element and its safe passage back to earth.
