The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (DVD)

More at stake…

packshotThe third in the phenomenally successful Twilight franchise may well be the best of the series, but it’s still unlikely to win over any new fans. Still, if you’re already fond of inoffensive teen angst with a fantasy edge, there’s plenty to keep you happy here.

And keeping Twilight’s demographic happy involves plenty of unconsumated lust between Bella (Kristen Stewart) and her vampire boyfriend Edward (Robert Pattinson), whose relationship comes under threat from Bella’s friendship with the off-unshirted werewolf Jacob (Tyler Lautner). But when the Pacific Northwest comes under attack from a group of vampires who actually do feast on humans, Jacob and Edward must bury their rivalry to fight together against this common enemy…

Director David Slade (30 Days of Night, Hard Candy) does his best, but the material follows such a rigid and generic formula that there is no room for him to bring any kind of personality to it. And Stewart, who’s proved herself more than capable elsewhere, appears as if she’s sleepwalking through proceedings. Perhaps she’s as tired of Bella’s vapidity as we are…

But, then, the Twilight Saga has never been about showcasing quality acting or filmmaking. It’s about appeasing the legions of pubescent fans who swoon over the idea of having a bloodsucker for a boyfriend, and about selling as much tie-in merchandise as tickets. And Eclipse will certainly do that. (2 stars)
