The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2009): Review & Clips

About a girl

Swedish author Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy – The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets Nest –  have become a global literary sensation, which is why it’s a pleasant surprise that it’s a Danish director, Neils Arden Oplev, who has brought it to the big screen. And that he’s done such a fantastic job with it is an added bonus.

The story tells of disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist). who is summoned to the isolated home of  Henrik Vanger (Sven-Bertil Taube) to investigate the disappearance of Henrik’s niece decades before, he uncovers a nest of deeply buried family secrets. Finding his investigation hampered by tight-lipped family members, Mikael soon runs into a brick wall; until the night he finds a clue on his laptop. Tracing it to headstrong tatoo-sporting hacker Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace), Mikael convinces her to join him on the case and they begin to get closer to the truth about what happened to the young girl. But, this new knowledge brings intrigue and danger…

This film version has thankfully kept all of the elements that made the source material such a page-turner; the narrative moves along at a clip and the intrigue simmers beneath the surface at all time, creating an absorbing atmosphere. Blomkvist is perfect in the lead role of Mikael, acting as a likeable and grounded guide through the twists and turns of this story. And it’s simply a cracking story to begin with, a traditional mystery, with old-fashioned heroes and villains given a modern twist with the use of technology to fit the puzzle pieces together. And special mention has to go to the stunning Rapace, who is a revelation as Lisbeth, a tough cookie with a heart who is set to become a heroine for a new generation of cinema-goers.
