Suck on this…

Let’s get this straight right from the start. Lesbian Vampire Killers is not big, it’s not clever but, if you take it in the spirit in which it’s intended – which, to be fair, is made clear from it’s OTT title – it can be quite funny. Most of the humour comes from the self-deprecating performance of James Corden, whose bumbling anti-hero Fletch pretty much saves the day in the comedy stakes.

Fletch, along with his heartbroken best pal Jimmy (Matthew Horne) decide to go on holiday to help Jimmy forget his ex-girlfriend. Ending up in an isolated rural village the pair soon hook up with some foreign lovelies, but their hopes for some r ‘n’ r are dashed when it becomes clear that all is not right with the townsfolk. A local curse turns all of the females into lesbian vampires on their 18th birthdays, and soon Fletch and Jimmy are battling for their very lives…

The horror influences are obvious throughout this big screen debut for comedy duo du jour Horne and Corden, after their TV success with Gavin and Stacey and their self-titled sketch show. Everything from American Werewolf to Blair Witch, Hammer Horror to B-movies are referenced, starting with the shlocky credits which set the tone for the movie. And that tone is absolutely one of stupidity and, as all of the cast throw themselves into the gooey proceedings, it’s easy to be swept right along with them. Expect too much from this horror comedy and you’ll be left disappointed, but if you leave your expectations at the door it’s not half bad. 2.5 stars
